What is Ocean Desal?
Ocean Desalination (Desal) is the process of removing salt from seawater either through
evaporation or by forcing the salty water through tiny membrane filters (reverse osmosis) in
order to make fresh, drinkable water.
While at first glance this may seem like a harmless supply of drinking water, there are many
problems that are created from this process:

 | Ocean water intakes kill untold amounts of marine life everyday |
| Drinking water quality of desal water is unknown due to new constituents that have yet to be | |
| evaluated |
| Large-scale desal has yet to work in the US |
| The projected cost of desal water is 2-4 times higher than other water sources |
| Desal plants require a lot of energy, adding demand to an already stressed and polluting resource |
| Due to the high cost of desal water, it will be sold for development and will not help to return | |
| water to struggling ecosystems |
| Most of the California desal proposed projects rely on intakes belonging to antiquated coastal | |
| power plant's once through cooling systems. |

There are many alternatives that are cost effective, have real environmental benefits,
and are an immediate response to the drought. These include: comprehensive water
conservation, using recycled water, watershed management, and the capture,
treatment, and reuse of storm water and urban runoff.
