The Desal Response Group was initially formed when Southern California water utilities and others
interested in ocean water desal brought together many environmental organizations working on
diverse issues such as water conservation, watershed management, drinking water quality, beach
pollution, marine issues (including fisheries and sanctuaries) and ocean water quality, to discuss
the potential for desal plants in Southern California.
With more questions than answers, the group continues to meet and has allied with regional and
local groups concerned about the rush to place desal in their neighborhoods. We continue to
communicate with organizations across the country, participate in conferences, respond to
Environmental Impact Reports (EIR's), work on related legislation and produce educational
materials on all issues concerning ocean desal.
